e*mail 1.5.5 offers you a multi-featured mail application which includes very minor enhancements to the built-in Mail application of Palm devices. I have been using the built-in Mail application for reading and writing e-mail on the road. The built-in Mail is a simple application, though it's very useful. I was beginning to think that I wanna some features it lacks...

Major Features:

1. Fully compatible with the built-in Mail application. (of course!)
2. User interfaces are not drastically changed. And I will not change as much as possible in the future.
3. You can reverse the sort order on the list view.
4. You can ignore 'Re:', 'RE:', 're:', 'Fw:', 'FW:', 'fw:', 'Aw:', 'AW:', 'aw:' when sorting.
5. You can leave an opened, ie. read, message unread.
6. You can set the default BCC address.
7. You can set a maximum of 32000 bytes for the HotSync truncation size. (new feature of version 0.1.6)
8. You can delete messages according to certain criteria, read flag, and/or message fields: From, Subject, To, Cc. (new feature of 0.2.0)
9. You can preserve original linefeed when replying.

11. You can record date and time when you put an outgoing message in Outbox, i.e. you tap the 'Send' button. This feature is suggested by Roger Sondermann .
12. Purge deleted messages completely: You can purge the deleted messages completely from device. By default entries of deleted messages remain until next HotSync. With this option you can erase both entries and data of deleted messages immediately. This will break normal HotSync operation. Use this with caution.
13. Use Reply-To header: You can honor Reply-To header of original message. Can edit the comment prefix character.

This system extension allows you to send short text messages from applications supporting the "Send..." command, for example the built-in Contacts, Memos, Calendar, Tasks.
Compatibility
Tested on Treo 600 and Treo 650. Should work on Treo 700p as well
Theoretically, it can also send SMS on other devices if there is an SMS-handling application registered in the system.
Usage
Select "Send..." from the menu
Select "SMS"
The text is pasted into the message, now you can fill in the "To:" field and click Send
Limitations
It can only send Text, exactly like if you typed it yourself. The receiver will also get the data as text only. For Memos this is obviously not a problem. For Contacts, Calendar events, and Tasks you can use RNS: TreoVCardReceiver to automatically transfer the incoming data into the associated application.
The amount of text is limited by the medium, you cannot send more than a few hundreds of characters.
And of course no binary data (it would be hard to find the binary file to match the size limit anyway).
What about the built-in Messaging/MMS?
On the Treo 600 you can send this kind of data with the built-in MMS application (call "Send", pick "MMS") - but there is no option to select SMS instead of MMS. On Treo 650 it is called "Messaging" instead of MMS and it is even worse (all you get is: "The messaging application does not support this type of item.").

@Mail 1.0 is well-known as a free yet reliable application which is designed to help users translate Outlook email into Outlook notes for use on Palm PDAs that don't have the mail application (eg Palm m100).

The emails can then be read on the Palm using the Memopad application after a Hotsync! New emails can be composed on the Palm and sent after a Hotsync.

At this stage the application is not a conduit and must be run manually before a Hotsync (to move new mail into the notes folder) and after a Hotsync (to send new mail):

• Fixed to work with public folders (and hence any mail folder you want ie doesnt have to be your Inbox)
• Can specify if you want only unread emails or not
• Updated help file

With Eudora for the Palm, you can send and receive email directly from your Palm device. Eudora supports POP3 and SMTP, or HotSync, for sending and receiving email. You can visit any Web site directly from your Palm device, without any additional servers required.

EudoraWeb is an HTML Web browser that offers online browsing to standard Web pages without requiring a proxy server. The Eudora Mail Conduit allows you to HotSync email between your Palm device and Windows desktop email clients. The Eudora Mail Conduit works with the Windows desktop version of Eudora 4.3.2 or higher, as long as the desktop Eudora client is operating in Paid or Sponsored mode.

Enhancements:

• Eudora and EudoraWeb support SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security) for server authentication and data privacy.
